Luftwaffe WW2 air-raids on British towns and cities
Luftwaffe WW2 bombing photos index

Re-issue of the map and photograph(s) used by Luftwaffe bomber pilots during WW2 air-raids on Dungeness

In the early 1940s, the German Luftwaffe planned a bombing campaign against British towns and cities, including Dungeness.

To enable Luftwaffe bomber aircrew identify their targets from the air during the raids on each town or city, the pilots and bomb-aimers were issued with a set of a map and half-tone aerial photograph(s) of the area to be attacked.

5 pages (shown below) were issued to bomber aircrew going on missions over Dungeness.

Used in air-raids over the target town or city: Every image was captioned to assist in navigation, positioning and target identification purposes during the raids themselves and the photographs were issued with the instructions Zum Verbrauch! Mitnahme von Ausschnitten des Bildteiles zum Feindflug gestattet (To be used! ... take these photographs with you on raids).

The view from the cockpit of a Heinkel He 111:  Effectively, these images put you in the cockpit of a German wartime He 111 (as shown in the video to the left) coming over its British target during an air-raid. You're seeing what the bomber crew saw; you're holding the same target location images they were holding.

Unique local history interest but originals rarely found:  As 1940s wartime originals of these German aircrew photographs are now virtually unobtainable (your own local history library or local history society may not even know they exist - worth checking perhaps?), we're publishing for museums, libraries and collectors a small number of a special A5 (8.5 x 6 inches; 21 x 15 cms) re-issue of the set for this area, each page and photograph complete with its original German text.

Musum and exhibition protection and display:  These images are supplied on gloss photographic paper, laminated for museum and exhibition protection and display.  Each set is also provided with a separate laminated explanatory card as shown towards the top of this page to assist in display purposes.

Copyright:  The copyright notice shown on the images below does not appear in the photographic images provided.

An unusual feature of the Luftwaffe Dungeness photographs: We are unable to explain the white "streaks" on three of the Dungeness photographs beyond suggesting they could be caused by unusual cloud cover or perhaps by reflections from surface standing water. All we can say for certain is that these "streaks" appear on the actual photographs as issued to the Luftwaffe aircrew to be used as target location and identification aids.
