Terms and conditions of the issue of Licence(s) to use our images
We supply high-resolution (usually 600 dpi) digital scans of old and rare photographs and other images of local and regional history interest for commercial or private publishing, on the basis of a non-exclusive single-user licence.
Placement of any order implies full acceptance of the following terms and conditions. If in any doubt as to the meaning of these terms and conditions, please contact us for clarification.
Briefly, our terms of supply below say that anyone purchasing a scan may use the scan to produce as many copies of as many different items as they want published under their own name without further payment or royalty of any kind. However, commercial printers should take particular note of paragraph 1.d below.
1: Licence to use our scans
a: Commercial and private printers and publishers purchasing any of our scans are effectively purchasing a non-exclusive single-user Licence to use the scan.
b: The puchase of a Licence to use a scan authorises the named Licence holder, whether private or commercial, to use the scan in any or as many different types of printed or published applications as they wish subject to the item(s) produced bearing the Licence holder's name as the publisher.
c: Holders of a Licence may not loan, sell, or otherwise distribute, or allow to be distributed, any scanned image in digital form to a third party. It must be clearly understand that the Licence holder has purchased a licence solely to use the scan in printing or publishing items on their own behalf. They have not purchased the scan itself which remains the property of Coloptics.
d: In particular, printers may not use their Licence to include any scan in printing work carried out by them on behalf of a customer or third party. In such cases the customer or third party must obtain their own Licence(s) to use the scan(s) in printed items carrying their name as publisher.
e: A Licence does not authorise the use of any scan for display or distribution on the internet or in any other electronic or digital form except in low 72 dpi resolution and with a maximum width of 400 pixels.
f: Any image used by any printer or publisher of items produced for sale (commercial postcards, gift cards, calendars, posters, books, etc.), should contain, whenever possible, the credit

in small but legible caps immediately above or below each image in normal journalistic image credit style similar to the image at the top of this page.
Coloptics accept that it will not always be appropriate for printers or publishers to comply with this request and so we leave it up to the discretion of the Licence holder in each case. However, such credit would be appreciated when given as a matter of normal business courtesy.
Whether or not credit is given, Coloptics would appreciate receiving for our archive an example of any item produced by the Licence holder using or incorporating one or more of our images.
2: Quality of the scans; modifying
The source material for our scans - mostly between around 100 and 150 years old - is almost without exception in good condition, without faults or blemishes. However, it is inevitable that the occasional age-related mark or minor blemish will be present in some of the scans. It is the user's responsibility to modify or clean up any such blemishes to suit their own requirements.
Scans of original b/w images are provided in greyscale. Users can modify the tonal qualities (brightness, contrast, tint and the like) to suit their own purposes.
We make no warranty as to the suitability of any images for any purpose.
3: Location and approximate year of any view
Information given by Coloptics as to the location of any view and on the approximate date of the view's production is based on contemporary information accompanying the original source material being scanned. Coloptics cannot be held responsible for any error in identification or for any loss resulting from any user repeating this error in identification.
4: Acceptance of these terms and conditions of use
Placement of any order implies full acceptance of the above terms and conditions. If you have any doubt as to the meaning or practical application of any of the above terms and conditions, please contact us for clarification prior to purchase.
